Chapter 512: After the smoke clears
"How did you get the access to the security controls?"At present, the violent patient who had caused havoc in the hospital and identified himself as Zimin, was locked to a desk. One of the doctor’s offices was set up into a temporary interrogation room. The effect of Mingshen’s special medicine was slowly wearing off.
"How did you get access to the security controls?"
At present, the violent patient who had caused havoc in the hospital and identified himself as Zimin, was handcuffed to a sturdy desk. One of the doctors’ consultation rooms had been hastily converted into a temporary interrogation room. Outside, officers continued collecting statements while firefighters ventilated the smoke-filled corridor. The sedative Mingshen had administered was gradually wearing off, allowing the man’s breathing to steady.
Zimin laughed hoarsely, though still groggy with the after effects. "You think I know what those fancy buttons do? I just pressed whatever looked important..."
Jia watched him in silence.
"You disabled the electronic locks on the third floor," she continued. "You also knew exactly where the security office was."
"What do you care?" He attempted to grimace.
"Because I certainly believe you weren’t acting alone. A patient knowing all these details is not a common occurrence."
"Get lost."
Mingshen smiled. "It’s okay, dear. Patients like these are my forte. The syringe I will poke this time into his arm would be far unfavorable than the last time."
As expected, Zimin scooted back. "Y-You stay away from me..!"
"You are the one who sparked the fire in my beautiful hospital. Have you ever heard of the word consequences?"
"It’s all their fault for kicking me out of my job and house!!!" He screamed.
"You should direct that anger to your boss and landlord, not my hospital staff and property. So naughty kids get naughty punishments~"
"There are officers right here! You cannot inject anything shady!"
Mingshen gave Jia and Huojin a look. The two simply shrugged. He returned his gaze at Zimin. "Did you see that?"
Jia said, "If you don’t want anything shady to get injected in your bloodstream, then start talking. This looks like one of those psychotic outbreaks, but that kind of violence is always random and more dangerous. I had expected you to take at least one nurse or patient hostage, but you did nothing of that sort. What were you exactly planning?"
Mingshen flicked at the syringe once, draining away all the color from his face. "I-I was told..."
"By who?" her eyes narrowed.
"A man."
"Who is he?"
"I don’t know."
"What did he look like?"
"Normal."
Huojin sighed. "Congratulations. You have just described half the population."
"The special feature of this medicine is that it also refreshes your memory," Mingshen beamed. "I cannot comment on the threshold of pain though."
Zimin gritted his teeth. "Tall... maybe. Wore a cap."
"What color?"
"I don’t remember."
"Age?"
"No idea."
"You know this medicine-"
"I swear I am telling the truth! Keep that thing away from me!!"
Jia tapped her finger lightly against the table. "How did you meet him?"
"At the shelter."
"The homeless shelter?"
He nodded.
"I had been sleeping there for...I don’t know - a week? Maybe two."
"And then?"
"He started talking to me."
"What did he say?"
Zimin lowered his head, his voice growing quieter. "He knew things."
"What things?"
"That I had lost my apartment and job," He gave a bitter laugh. "Funny, isn’t it? A complete stranger knew more about my life than anyone else."
Jia leaned forward. "What did he say then?"
"He kept coming back. Every few days."
"He visited you repeatedly?"
"Yeah."
"He bought me food."
"Anything else?"
"He gave me some money and found me a room for a few nights. He said...if I deliberately create chaos here, he will see to it that I get a new job - even better than the last one. A brand new house too."
"And you believed him?"
"Anything was better than living in a homeless shelter," he glared.
"Why did he want this?" Huojin picked up. "Did he say anything?"
He shrugged. "He didn’t say, I didn’t ask. As long as I got my old life back, I was even willing to kill for him."
"That kind of a confession makes it difficult to get you a bail, you know," Jia smiled with a chill. "You should be fortunate that nobody was hurt. But don’t expect any leniency from the court."
The officers took him away and Jia leaned back on the chair, tired. "We will have to drop a visit at the shelter once. Who knows if this mystery man contacted someone else too. Or at least someone would have seen him."
Huojin gave a thumbs up. "Will look into it. Shall I leave you two lovebirds alone?"
Her brow twitched at his sly grin and she kicked him in his heel.
"Fine, fine! I will really leave you two alone! My bestie isn’t my bestie anymore..." he sniffled and performed a dramatic exit.
"That man..."
Her head then jerked towards Mingshen and her eyes narrowed. She grabbed his face and arms and did a thorough inspection.
He blinked. "What are you checking for?"
"Whether you got hurt anywhere. You just bulldozed through the smoke and fire," she glared. "I know it’s your hospital but you need to stay put until the authorities say so."
His brow raised. "Are you the authority, Spicy~? What can I say...rebelling against authority is kind of tantalizing~"
"You want this authority to slap you in your face?"
He burst into laughter, then pulled her into his lap. Jia froze, her head turning three-sixty in all directions, panicked.
"Nobody is here. Also, you are sitting on your boyfriend’s lap. There is no need to be ashamed."
"While being on active duty," she coughed.
"So am I but doing forbidden things feels exciting, doesn’t it?"
"You...how could you be so relaxed? Someone seems to have a grudge against you and orchestrated all this chaos. What if you had been here and gotten hurt?"
Holding her chin between his fingers, he gave a light tug. "Well then my cop girlfriend would protect me, won’t she?"
She smiled. "I feel like it will be interesting to leave your fate to God."
A knock then sounded. "Dr. Yang. I think there is some problem..."
