Chapter 1557 - 1558: Who Do You Think You Are?
Yang Shu, Qian Weiguo, Shen Tingting, and Gao Qiang sealed off Zhao Gongming’s home so tightly there wasn’t the slightest crack left. The trap was already set; all that was left was for the enemy to walk into the net.
Because of Zhao Gongming’s special job and position, the place where his family lived was also heavily guarded, with certain layers of security measures.
At the same time that Yang Chu killed himself, Cheng Mu moved into action on his side as well.
After a round of reconnaissance, Cheng Mu slipped in easily, his figure appearing outside the door of Zhao Gongming’s house.
Cheng Mu carefully surveyed the surroundings, then rang the doorbell.
"Someone’s coming." In another spacious room, Qian Weiguo and Gao Qiang, monitoring Zhao Gongming’s home, exchanged a look and immediately marked Cheng Mu as a suspect—and a highly suspicious enemy.
Two sharp gazes locked onto Cheng Mu through the monitor screen.
At the same time, inside Zhao Gongming’s house, Shen Tingting and Yang Shu were visiting under the pretense of being Zhao Gongming’s colleagues. Qian Weiguo’s and Gao Qiang’s voices came into their ears through earpieces.
"He’s finally here." That was the voice echoing in Shen Tingting’s and Yang Shu’s minds.
With barely contained excitement, Yang Shu and Shen Tingting went to open the door together.
The door opened.
What met Cheng Mu’s eyes were two faces full of ill will, wearing mocking smiles.
"Not good!" Relying on instinct, Cheng Mu instantly sensed something wrong, a chilling feeling of walking into a trap rising up inside him.
"Cheng Mu, we’ve been waiting for you for quite some time," Shen Tingting and Yang Shu said with schadenfreude.
This mysterious figure, Cheng Mu, had exposed himself to Shen Tingting and the others earlier than the Transforming Mouse, and had already stepped into this trap.
Ever since Liu Anping died, there had been no news of Cheng Mu showing his face.
However, after the incidents with Liu Anping and Niu Ben, Shen Tingting and the others had already clearly identified Cheng Mu’s face.
Cheng Mu’s expression changed abruptly; his pretty features went pale. The shock was so great it left him momentarily dazed.
Then, when he came back to himself, he spun around to run—his feet already reacting to flee before his head had even fully turned.
"Since you’ve come, how could we let you run?" Yang Shu charged after him.
"Stay where you are." Shen Tingting’s figure flashed like the wind as she also took off in pursuit.
Cheng Mu didn’t even look back, not daring to hesitate for an instant. Right now he only hated that he hadn’t grown two extra legs; he simply couldn’t run fast enough.
In the blink of an eye, Qian Weiguo and Gao Qiang cut off Cheng Mu’s escape route.
"My life is over!" Cheng Mu thought bitterly, his face showing frantic anxiety.
He stopped running and could only brace himself to fight.
He had already sensed something was wrong long ago; there was no way he’d get out smoothly.
Unwilling as he was, he could only cling to that last shred of hope and try to break away.
Now, with enemies surrounding him front and back, he had reached a dead end; there wasn’t the slightest room left for luck.
After a brief, simple bout of fighting, Cheng Mu was captured alive.
Unlike Yang Chu, Cheng Mu didn’t possess the courage to kill himself.
"Even if they lock me up, I still have a chance to escape." After being taken alive, this was the quiet murmur in Cheng Mu’s heart.
...
In the blink of an eye it was the next day; the night had slipped by.
Wu Dayong’s elderly mother and Zhao Gongming’s family were secretly transferred to a safe location.
Qiu Wen, Shen Yaqing, Zhang Kui, Shen Tingting, Qian Weiguo, Yang Shu, and Gao Qiang, the seven of them, once again went back into the shadows, not exposed on the surface to unrelated people.
Each of the seven had their own role, continuing to exert unseen influence from the dark.
Secret interrogation room at the research institute.
All work in the interrogation room was personally overseen by Li Tong, under twenty-four-hour surveillance.
Zhao Gongming and Wu Dayong were held here; Cheng Mu became the third person locked up in this place.
Food, drink, and all security measures were personally supervised by Li Tong.
He was afraid that Zhao Gongming and the others would be assassinated or murdered.
Ye Fan appeared in front of Wu Dayong again and said in a cold tone, "I think now you can start talking."
As he spoke, he tossed a photograph onto the table, placing it in front of Wu Dayong.
The person in the photo was Yang Chu, taken after his death.
Because Yang Chu was an unfamiliar face, it would take a bit of time to verify his exact identity.
"We’re still confirming this man’s identity. Besides this guy, Cheng Mu was captured alive and is being held here." Ye Fan fixed his gaze on Wu Dayong, speaking unhurriedly. "I’m sure you recognize the man in the photo. He was outside your mother’s door when our people surrounded him. Knowing he could no longer escape death, he killed himself."
"How did Cheng Mu get caught?" Wu Dayong’s expression turned urgent as he asked nervously, "What about my mother? Is she all right?"
"Cheng Mu was taken alive outside Zhao Gongming’s place." Ye Fan gave a brief explanation and said, "As for your mother, she’s fine for now. But I can’t guarantee she’ll be fine later. That depends on what you choose to do."
"You’re threatening me?" Wu Dayong’s face darkened with displeasure, anger rising.
"You ungrateful bastard." Ye Fan snapped, "If I really wanted to threaten you, you’d have confessed a long time ago. If your mother ends up suffering, that’s on you. It’s the sin you created, and you deserve to face the consequences. You still dare accuse me of threats? You really think you’re somebody? You think I’ve got no way to deal with you?"
"To tell you the truth, your mother escaped this time because I was being merciful."
"If I didn’t give a damn, or waited until your mother had something happen to her before stepping in, what could you do to me?" Ye Fan said icily.
His goal was to crush any hope or illusions Wu Dayong still had.
When it came to an old woman, Ye Fan disdained using those vile tactics.
But against someone like Wu Dayong, he could only resort to this relatively extreme form of coercion.
Wu Dayong’s expression kept shifting, his heart a jumble of emotions, thoughts in chaos.
He hated Ye Fan’s attitude, but when he thought about his own identity and position, all his temper evaporated.
"I only have one request. As long as you protect my mother, I’ll answer whatever you ask. I’ll tell you everything I know." Wu Dayong laid it all on the line, as if draining every last bit of strength to get the words out.
This was him taking a stand, a turning of his resolve.
The moment he said this, it meant he was going to betray the Transforming Mouse.
"You still dare make demands?"
"In here, you don’t have any right to choose or speak. All you can do is confess honestly."
"All you can do is pray silently in your heart and hope we feel some shred of sympathy. If we do, your mother will continue to be tightly protected by us. Otherwise, just wait for news of her death."
"Or you can come clean and maybe stir up a bit more of our sympathy."
"And you still dare to dream about making demands? Who do you think you are?"
Ye Fan met his gaze coldly, firing back without the slightest politeness.
Wu Dayong’s face went livid, anger and humiliation churning together.
