Chapter 540: The Most Important Thing

Dave’s way was different from Lucas’s. He had the power to ask for more. He could have taken over the company if he wanted. But he didn’t. He chose something small.

Lucas let out a laugh, though it sounded bitter. There was a trace of mockery in it, mostly directed at himself.

Those words hit something deep inside him. They tore apart the values he used to be so proud of.

At that moment, he thought about his late wife and eldest son.

They had been nothing like him. And neither was Dave.

But Rupert, the one who was most like him, turned out to be the one who tried to ruin everything. He nearly destroyed the Evans Group.

It felt like fate was playing a cruel joke on him.

Lucas stared at his grandson for a long time, and he felt dizzy. He finally felt regret after what he did. Maybe… he had been wrong all along.

Dave looked at his grandfather and said coldly, “Grandpa, you don’t have any other choice now.”

Lucas took a breath and pulled himself together. He looked at Dave with mixed emotions. There was conflict in his eyes, but also a trace of respect.

He wondered just how far Dave, someone so different from him, could go.

“Okay. I promise. As for Rupert, I’ll deal with him myself. If there’s nothing else, you can go.”

Lucas pushed himself up and leaned against the headboard. Right now, all he wanted was some peace and a good rest.

After a brief pause, Dave spoke again. “Grandpa, there’s someone else who wants to talk to you.”

Lucas looked slightly surprised.

The door opened, and Bianca entered the room.

Lucas didn’t expect Bianca to come at that moment. But the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. If Bianca hadn’t shown up, Rupert’s real intentions might have remained hidden.

It looked like Dave came with her.

Bianca turned to Dave and said, “I want to talk to Lucas alone.”

“Okay. I’ll wait outside,” Dave replied, then left the room with Wyatt.

Bianca walked over and sat on the edge of the bed, facing Lucas.

“You… you wanted to see me?” Lucas asked carefully, his eyes filled with doubt as he looked at her.

Bianca held out her hand. Resting on her palm was the red diamond necklace.

“What… what does this mean?” Lucas asked, clearly shocked to see it. He recognized it right away; it was the same necklace Bianca had pawned.

“Lucas, I think there’s been a big misunderstanding between us,” Bianca said gently, her voice calm and soothing. A soft smile appeared on her face. “I know how important this necklace is to you. That’s why I’m here to return it to you and the Evans family.”

Lucas stared at her, stunned. His eyes widened. “Why?” he asked, completely confused.

Bianca looked down at the red diamond in her hand. “I pawned the necklace because Reece framed me. That left our company drowning in debt. At the same time, Dave’s company was being investigated by the Evans Group. I didn’t want to drag him into more trouble. Pawning the necklace felt like the only way to fix things quickly. I even made a deal with the pawnshop to buy it back within six months.”

She paused, thinking back. “I never lied to you. I gave the necklace back to Dave, but he got upset and said taking back a gift was unfair. He ended up tossing it away. I searched for hours in the bushes before I finally found it and kept it safe.”

Bianca looked him in the eye. “If I wanted to make money off it, I could’ve sold it secretly. No one would’ve known. But I didn’t. I’m not trying to defend what I did, I just want to clear things up. I’m returning the necklace now to settle everything.”

Lucas stared at her, his eyes moving from her face to the necklace. He didn’t know what to say.

“Dave bought this necklace while he was still with the Evans Group,” she added. “So it belongs to the Evans family. I’m just giving it back to where it really belongs.”

Bianca let out a quiet breath, feeling the weight lift off her shoulders. Then, she turned to leave.

But just as she was about to leave, Lucas’s voice stopped her. “Bianca, the recording… was it you?”

Bianca turned back to face him. She wore a serious expression. “Yes. After Wyatt’s plane crash, I figured Rupert would come after me next. So, I set a trap. I used his own tricks to get him to expose his plans.”

Lucas looked at her cautiously. He saw how much more there was to her than he had realized. Still, he couldn’t hide his doubt. “Weren’t you scared? What was in it for you? Weren’t you afraid of what would happen if it all went wrong?”

“I was scared,” Bianca said honestly. “But I had to take that chance. It was the only way I could find the truth… and protect Dave.”

Lucas blinked, her last words hitting him hard. “Protect…” he repeated softly and it finally sank into him.

For the first time, Lucas saw it clearly, he had never really tried to protect Dave.

Their relationship had always been about control. He pushed him hard, set impossible standards, and constantly tested him.

And yet here was Bianca, a woman with no powerful family or influence openly saying she wanted to protect Dave. She had risked everything, even her life, to do it. She wasn’t pretending. She meant every word.

That truth hit Lucas hard, shaking everything he used to believe about her.

She wasn’t selfish or greedy. She was brave, clever, and deeply loyal. Everything she had done was to help Dave, even if it meant putting herself in danger.

Lucas fell deep into thought. Had he been wrong about her all this time? The more he looked back, the clearer it became. He indeed judged her wrongly.

Just as Lucas was about to say something, Bianca opened the door and walked out.

He stayed where he was, alone, the red diamond necklace resting in his hand.

But was this really the ending he wanted?

Suddenly, loud voices and the sound of an argument broke out just outside the door.
