Chapter 521: Can I Ask Something?
Chapter 521: Can I Ask Something?
Wyatt thumped his chest seriously. “There won’t be a next time. I promise.” The weight of that vow was clear. They both felt it.
Even if Dave saw him as something more, Wyatt still saw Dave as his leader. He was just someone who chose to follow.
“I’ll keep you informed from now on,” Wyatt said. “Don’t get tired of me nagging. Old folks do that a lot.”
Dave gave a soft smile. “Why would I mind? My dad died when I was little. Your nagging just reminds me that someone still cares.”
Wyatt’s eyes suddenly welled up. He looked at Dave and said, “Alright then! I’ll take that role. But don’t you dare complain when I start nagging more?”
The peaceful place, filled with birdsong and the scent of flowers, matched the silent understanding between them.
The sun was bright. It felt like old wounds were finally starting to heal. Titles didn’t matter. What mattered was the bond they shared. Just like Bianca had said.
Then a sudden vibration broke the calm. Dave frowned as he answered the call.
“Hello, are you connected to Miss Skylar Larson? Please come quickly. There’s a problem with the patient.”
Dave’s heart dropped. She had seemed fine the last time he saw her. How did things go wrong quickly?
He told Wyatt what the nurse had said. Wyatt’s eyes widened in shock. “What? The nurse said Skylar’s having mental issues. I can't be blamed for it. I didn’t do anything to upset her. I just—”
Dave cut him off. “Let’s go see her first.”
Wyatt gave a quick nod. Dave was right. They had to check things out. Maybe Skylar was just pretending again.
They hurried to the hospital room. Even before opening the door, they heard Skylar’s voice. She was saying all kinds of things at once.
“I love Dave. No, I don’t. I want to be Mrs. Evans. I really love him. Wait, no, hahaha… What is love anyway? What does real love even mean?”
Dave pushed the door open and walked in. A cool breeze slipped into the room.
Skylar stood by the window, staring at the bare branches outside. Her figure seemed distant and alone. When she heard them coming, she turned and gave Dave a gentle smile. It felt like she was taken back to the first time they met. For a second, it seemed like time could stop. But life doesn’t work that way.
Her face was pale, with dried tears, but her smile was warm; like the last light of sunset.
“You’re finally here. Sorry, I fooled the nurse into thinking I was having a breakdown. I’m actually okay. I just needed to see you. There’s something important I need to say.”
She leaned against the window sill. Her body shook a little. She looked tired.
“I had to tell you this in person,” she said. “It’s the only way I’ll feel at peace. Please, can I ask something?”
Wyatt looked frustrated. He didn’t understand why she kept playing games. “Dave, don’t listen to her. She’s always scheming. This could be another setup.”
But Dave didn’t respond to him. He looked straight into Skylar’s eyes.
“Say what you need to,” he said.
Skylar’s smile carried both sadness and hope. Her eyes were filled with emotions.
“Dave, have you ever loved me, even just a little, all these years?” she asked softly.
Silence filled the hospital room. It was heavy, almost swallowing every sound.
Dave lifted his eyes to Skylar and he stared at her seriously. Then, his voice finally broke the silence.
“In that dark cellar, seeing you felt like seeing an angel. You had a place in my heart. But life took us in a different direction.”
The words faded, and Skylar understood what he wasn’t saying.
She had once meant something to him, but her own choices had slowly worn that away.
Tears filled her eyes. She looked at the man in front of her and tried to find the boy she once knew. But the past wouldn’t come back.
A faint, bittersweet smile crossed her lips. “I guess... the best part of our story was right at the beginning.”
Things could’ve turned out differently.
But she was the one who pulled everything apart.
Skylar looked out the window. The clouds were drifting away. Birds flew high, disappearing into the sky. She smiled again, soft and distant. Her voice came out in a whisper—maybe for Dave, maybe just for herself.
“Dave, I’ve decided to let you go.”
She picked up the agreement and slowly ripped it apart, piece by piece.
Each tear felt like letting something go. The pieces drifted to the floor like dust.
She stared at them, thinking about the future they would never have.
“Bianca, you win. If there’s a next life...”
Tears ran down her face, but she smiled; just like she did the day they first met.
At that moment, she knew there was no turning back.
Nothing meant anything anymore. The end had already come.
The love once she cherished was never real. Just an illusion.
She closed her eyes. A faint, peaceful smile touched her lips.
Dave and Wyatt froze in shock. Before they could move, Skylar threw the window open, held onto the sill, and with no fear left in her heart, she jumped.
The fall ended everything without a sound.
Skylar’s life which was full of pain and mistakes came to an end.
Sadness and heavy sighs filled the room.
Dave and Wyatt stood by the window both shocked and lost in thought.
That was the last chapter of Skylar’s story.
A wave of gasps rose and fell like a troubled song near the ground.
The crowd, once just strangers, became one restless mass full of worry.
Amid the chaos, medics pushed their way through quickly.
She lay on the cold, hard ground, her life slowly slipping away. The cold had left her body bruised and worn. Her last breath was already gone.
Bianca got there just in time to see it. Her legs felt weak as she stared at the scene, unable to believe it.
Skylar was no longer there. All that remained was a tired soul that couldn’t keep fighting anymore.
Skylar had given in to the darkness.
Dave told Bianca what Skylar said before she died.
Bianca didn’t say anything, but her silence said it all.
She felt sorry for Skylar. Her life ended too soon.
Still, she knew it took a kind of deep courage to choose that ending.
To Bianca, Skylar was never someone she needed to defeat. She wasn’t part of some victory.
