Love by the Contract

Chapter 155

Chapter 155

The courtroom buzzed with tension as Emma Hamilton entered, her shoulders squared and her chin held high. Behind her trailed a group of loyal colleagues, Thomas included, despite his weakened state.

The foundation’s reputation—and her personal integrity—hung in the balance as she prepared to face yet another challenge in what felt like an endless battle to protect everything she had built.

Emma's legal team had been working tirelessly, piecing together a defense to expose the baselessness of the competitor’s claims. But in the court of public opinion, perception was as crucial as evidence.

The media coverage was unrelenting, headlines questioning whether Emma’s foundation had crossed ethical lines dominating every outlet.

Inside, the courtroom was packed, journalists and onlookers filling the benches. Emma scanned the room, her eyes landing on the opposing legal team, led by the smug representative of the rival nonprofit.

Their strategy was clear: use the stolen data to paint her foundation as reckless and untrustworthy. But Emma was determined to flip the narrative.

As her lawyer, Evelyn Marks, approached the bench, the air in the room shifted. Evelyn was a seasoned litigator with a sharp mind and an unshakable demeanor. She set down a stack of meticulously organized files and addressed the judge with authority.

“Your Honor,” Evelyn began, “we are here today to present indisputable evidence not only of my client’s innocence but also of the malicious intent behind this lawsuit. The accusations against the Hamilton Foundation are built on stolen and manipulated data—data that was deliberately altered to mislead this court and the public.”

The opposing lawyer, a slick man named Donovan Grant, rose to his feet, his expression oozing confidence. “Objection, Your Honor. This is an attempt to deflect from the central issue. The data speaks for itself.”

Judge Whitaker, an imposing figure with a stern gaze, raised a hand to silence him. “I’ll allow Ms. Marks to continue. Let’s hear the evidence.”

Evelyn nodded, her composure unwavering. “Your Honor, we have reason to believe that this entire case has been orchestrated as part of a larger scheme to discredit the Hamilton Foundation. And today, we intend to prove it.”

The first part of the hearing was a tedious back-and-forth over the legitimacy of the data. Donovan attempted to cast doubt on Emma’s practices, citing discrepancies in funding allocations and project timelines.

But Evelyn countered each point with precision, presenting documented evidence of the foundation’s transparency and adherence to ethical standards.

Emma sat silently, her hands clenched in her lap. Every accusation felt like a personal attack, but she knew she couldn’t let the frustration show.

Instead, she focused on the steady rhythm of Evelyn’s voice, trusting her to dismantle the opposition’s arguments piece by piece.

By midday, the tension in the room had reached a boiling point. Donovan stood to present what he claimed was damning evidence: financial records pulled from the stolen data, allegedly showing misappropriation of funds.

He projected a series of charts and graphs onto a screen, his tone dripping with smugness as he explained the supposed inconsistencies.

“Your Honor,” Donovan concluded, “this data clearly demonstrates a pattern of unethical behavior. The Hamilton Foundation has exploited donor trust for personal gain.”

Emma felt a surge of anger, but Evelyn was already on her feet, her expression sharp.

“Your Honor, we object to the use of this data as evidence. Not only was it obtained illegally, but we also have reason to believe it has been tampered with. In fact, we have surveillance footage that casts significant doubt on the plaintiff’s claims.”

The room erupted into murmurs. Donovan’s confident façade faltered for the first time as he exchanged a nervous glance with his team. The judge banged his gavel, restoring order.

“Proceed, Ms. Marks,” Judge Whitaker said.

Evelyn approached the bench, holding a USB drive. “Your Honor, this footage was obtained from security cameras during the break-in at my client’s office. It captures not only the theft but also implicates individuals associated with the plaintiff in orchestrating the crime.”

Gasps rippled through the courtroom as the footage began to play. The grainy video showed two masked individuals breaking into the foundation’s office, rifling through files and accessing computers.

But then came the crucial moment: one of the thieves removed their mask briefly, revealing a face that was immediately recognizable—an employee from the rival nonprofit.

Emma’s breath caught in her throat. The footage was irrefutable. It was the break they had been hoping for.

Donovan leapt to his feet, sputtering objections. “Your Honor, this is inadmissible! The footage could have been doctored—”

“Enough, Mr. Grant,” Judge Whitaker interrupted, her tone icy. “The court will examine the authenticity of this evidence. Until then, you will refrain from baseless accusations.”

Evelyn pressed forward. “Your Honor, we’ve also obtained testimony from one of the individuals involved in the break-in.

They have confirmed under oath that they were hired by representatives of the plaintiff to steal and manipulate data from the Hamilton Foundation.”

The courtroom was in chaos now, reporters scribbling furiously and spectators whispering among themselves.

Emma felt a glimmer of hope for the first time in weeks.

The truth was finally coming to light.
