Chapter 62
Chapter 62
The morning air was sharp and cold as Ryan approached Brenda’s house, a thick manila envelope clutched in his hand. Now that she’s recovered from labour, he had to act. His jaw was set, his movements purposeful. This wasn’t a visit for Caleb or a reluctant effort to smooth over their co-parenting; this was war.
Brenda answered the door in a plush robe, her hair loosely tied back. “Ryan,” she greeted, her surprise quickly morphing into feigned warmth. “What a—”
“Cut the act,” Ryan interrupted, his voice like a whip. He pushed past her into the living room, tossing the envelope onto the coffee table.
Brenda stiffened, her eyes darting between him and the envelope. “What’s this?” she asked cautiously.
“Proof,” Ryan snapped. “Proof that you’ve been working with Horizon Enterprises. Feeding them information about me, my business, and—” his voice faltered slightly, anger flashing in his eyes—“our children.”
Brenda’s face paled, but she recovered quickly, crossing her arms defensively. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Ryan leaned forward, his hands braced on the coffee table, his voice low and venomous. “Don’t play dumb with me. Emails, text logs, payment records—all tying you to Horizon. You betrayed me, Brenda. You endangered my family.”
Brenda’s eyes widened for a fraction of a second before narrowing into a steely glare. “Endangered your family?” she retorted, her voice sharp. “I did what I had to do to protect our son. You think Horizon approached me out of the blue? They made promises—promises that Caleb would be taken care of no matter what happened to you.”
Ryan straightened, his fists clenching at his sides. “You sold us out. You sold out your own son’s safety for their blood money.”
“They promised me stability for Caleb!” Brenda shot back, her voice rising. “What kind of father would you be if your empire crumbled? If you couldn’t provide for him?”
Ryan’s laugh was cold, bitter. “You don’t get to lecture me about being a parent, Brenda. Not after this. I’ve supported you and Steve even after everything you’ve done. I’ve been there for Caleb. But this?” He gestured to the envelope. “This is unforgivable.”
Brenda’s expression cracked, a flash of panic crossing her face. “Ryan, wait—”
“Save it,” he growled, stepping back toward the door. “You’ve lost whatever chance you had at redemption. I’ll support Caleb because he’s innocent in all this. But you? You stay out of my life. And if you ever try to undermine me again, I’ll destroy you.”
The door slammed behind him, leaving Brenda standing in the middle of her meticulously decorated living room, the sound echoing in her ears.
She sank onto the couch, her hands trembling as she reached for the envelope. Her mind raced, her fear morphing into a simmering rage.
“I won’t let you take everything from me,” she whispered to herself, her nails digging into the leather armrest. “You’ll regret this, Ryan.”
