The Barren Ex-Wife Gave Birth to Twins

Chapter 37

Chapter 37

The harsh fluorescent lights of the police station reflected off the pale walls, casting everything in a sterile glow. Amelia sat on a worn bench in the waiting area, her arms wrapped around herself. The adrenaline that had carried her through the chaos at the park had faded, leaving a bone-deep exhaustion in its wake.

Ryan paced nearby, his movements restless, his fists clenching and unclenching at his sides. Every now and then, his eyes flicked toward her, softening slightly.

“Do you want some water?” he asked finally, breaking the tense silence.

Amelia shook her head. “No, thanks.” Her voice was low, almost a whisper.

A police officer approached, handing Ryan a clipboard. “We’ll need your signature here. The suspect hasn’t said much yet, but we’ll keep you updated.”

Ryan scribbled his name and returned the clipboard with a terse nod. As the officer walked away, he turned to Amelia, his face lined with concern. “Are you okay?”

Her breath hitched as she nodded, though her composure was fraying. “I just… I can’t stop thinking about what could’ve happened to Damien. If you hadn’t been there—”

“Stop,” Ryan interrupted gently, sitting down beside her. His voice softened. “He’s okay. That’s what matters.”

Amelia’s hands tightened in her lap. “But what if there’s more? What if—”

Ryan reached for her hand, covering it with his. The warmth of his touch stilled her spiraling thoughts. “Nothing’s going to happen to them, Amelia. I won’t let it.”

His steady confidence broke through her defenses, and she leaned into him slightly, her voice trembling. “I don’t know what I’d do without them.”

“You won’t have to find out,” Ryan replied firmly, his eyes locked on hers. “I’ll always protect them. Always.”

The intensity in his gaze was undeniable, a reminder of the man she had once loved. Overwhelmed by a mixture of gratitude and buried emotions, Amelia leaned in without thinking. Their lips met, the kiss igniting instantly with a fire that neither of them had anticipated.

It was raw, unrestrained, and electric. The world outside the small waiting room faded away as years of unresolved feelings surged to the surface. Ryan’s hand cupped her face, pulling her closer, while her fingers clutched the front of his shirt, grounding herself in the moment.

But as quickly as it began, Amelia pulled back, her breath coming in short gasps. Her wide eyes searched his, a storm of emotions swirling between them.

“Amelia,” Ryan said, his voice thick with emotion. “That… that wasn’t nothing.”

She stood abruptly, her legs unsteady. “I—I shouldn’t have done that,” she stammered, taking a step back.

Ryan rose, his expression resolute. “You can’t tell me it didn’t mean something. It felt real, Amelia. Don’t lie to yourself.”

Her voice broke as she replied, “It doesn’t matter if it felt real. It can’t happen again.” Without waiting for his response, she turned and hurried toward the door.
