The Pleasure You Give

Chapter 18

Chapter 18

I was about to witness the difference between seduction and submission, and I had no idea which would destroy me first.

"Princess Penelope?" The steward's voice carried that practiced smoothness I'd learned to dread. "Lord Cassius requests your presence for this evening's demonstration."

"What kind of demonstration?" I asked, though I suspected I didn't want to know the answer.

"Educational. For the visiting noble from the eastern provinces." His smile revealed nothing. "Part of your continued education, as always."

I followed him through corridors I'd never seen before, my unease growing with each step. "What exactly am I supposed to learn tonight?"

"Observation, Your Highness. Simply observation."

The chamber was unlike anything I'd seen before, opulent beyond imagination, with silk hangings in deep jewel tones and golden fixtures that caught the candlelight like captured stars.

Masked spectators filled the space, their identities hidden behind elaborate designs of feathers and precious metals.

"Quite the gathering," a woman whispered behind an ornate peacock mask as I took my seat. "I heard they specifically requested the demonstration be... authentic."

"Authentic how?" her companion asked.

"No performance. No artifice. True submission."

The air hummed with anticipation and something darker, the electric tension of voyeurs gathered to witness something forbidden.

At the center of it all, two Fae Adepts knelt on silk cushions.

They were beautiful, as all the Fae were, but there was something different about these two. The way they held themselves spoke of absolute control, of power channeled through submission. Their single wings trembled not with fear but with focused energy, like bowstrings drawn taut.

The demonstration began without fanfare. What followed was a sequence of movements so precise, so carefully choreographed, that it took my breath away.

Every gesture was calculated to display skill, submission, and trust in equal measure.

The dominant Adept, a woman with silver hair and eyes like winter ice, moved around her partner with predatory grace, while he responded to her every command with fluid obedience.

It was controlled, sensual, and underneath it all ran a current of something colder, harder. This wasn't about pleasure or desire. It was about who held the power and who surrendered it.

My heart raced as I watched, torn between fascination and horror. I wanted to look away from the intimate display, from the way the male Adept's body responded to commands given in whispers too soft for the audience to hear.

But I couldn't. For the first time, I began to understand why they called it sacred. And why it was absolutely terrifying.

The performance ended to murmured appreciation from the masked spectators. As they filed out, discussing what they'd witnessed with the casual air of art critics, I remained frozen in my chair.

The Adepts had vanished as silently as they'd appeared, leaving only the lingering scent of sandalwood and something I couldn't name.

I found Rios alone in the chamber afterward, watching the candles burn low. He stood with his back to me, his single wing catching the flickering light, and for a moment I thought he might not acknowledge my presence.

"Beautiful, wasn't it?" he said without turning around.

"No." The word came out harsher than I intended. "It wasn't beautiful. It was a performance."

"And what's wrong with performance?"

I stepped closer, fury blazing in my chest. "Don't you dare pretend that spectacle was about art. You let them feast on broken spirits and call it beautiful."

He whirled around, silver eyes flashing. "Don't confuse performance with freedom, Princess."

"Freedom?" I laughed, harsh and cutting. "There was nothing free about that degradation."

"Wasn't there?" His voice turned deadly quiet. "We make them watch us. We make them believe we're willing participants in their sick fantasies. That's how we survive their world."

"By becoming their entertainment? Their playthings?"

"By controlling the narrative!" He stalked toward me, predatory and dangerous. "You think we're victims? You think that display was about submission?"

"Yes!"

"Then you're blind." He was close enough now that I could see the fire burning behind his controlled mask. "That was two people who've learned to turn chains into weapons. Every movement, every response, every moment of apparent surrender—it was all their choice. They made those nobles believe they were witnessing domination, when they were actually seeing mastery."

"Mastery?" I spat. "They were on their knees!"

"And who held the real power in that room?" His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper. "The ones kneeling, or the ones desperate to watch?"

The question hit like a physical blow. I stepped closer, drawn by the intensity radiating from him.

"You're twisting it. Making slavery sound like strategy."

"And you're playing the naive princess, pretending the world is as simple as your fairy tales." His eyes burned silver fire. "You want to know what real submission looks like? It's sitting in that gilded cage they call your life, smiling prettily while they auction off your future."

"How dare you—"

"At least they chose their chains. You inherited yours."

The words sliced through me. I moved closer, close enough to see the pulse hammering in his throat.

"You think you're so enlightened? So free?" My voice shook with rage. "You're just another polished collar, pretty enough to make slavery look like art."

"Better a willing slave than a caged bird who thinks her cage is a castle."

"Better a caged bird than a broken one who thinks his chains are wings."

We stood inches apart now, breathing hard, the argument crackling between us like lightning. His hands clenched at his sides, mine trembled with fury.

"You want to know what freedom really looks like?" he demanded, his voice raw.

"Show me."

His hand shot out, fingers curling around my waist, pulling me against him with shocking force. The silk of my gown crumpled under his grip as he looked down at me with an intensity that stole my breath.

"This," he whispered against my lips. "Choosing the fire even when you know it will burn you."

Our mouths hovered dangerously close, separated by heartbeats and the weight of everything that would shatter if we crossed this line. His breath was hot against my skin, his eyes black with want.

"Princess—" The word came out broken, desperate.

Footsteps echoed in the corridor. Sharp. Deliberate. Getting closer.

We sprang apart like we'd been burned. A servant entered, eyes downcast, beginning to clear the spent candles with practiced efficiency.

Rios's face became stone, the mask sliding back into place with brutal precision. The moment died between us, leaving only the echo of what we'd almost destroyed ourselves to taste.

My hands shook as I smoothed my skirts. The fire still burned in my veins, but now it felt like poison.
