On The Border - Marry Him Or Die

Angelina’s POV

It was a pretty stupid decision to decide to take a walk alone with Lucas, in his own freaking territory.

He could have some kind of hidden motive behind this mysterious generosity that came out of no where for me, no he definitely has a motive. And I was falling right into his trap right now as I descended down the stairs towards the front door where he was waiting for me.

He’s probably about to grill me about my nightmare. Alone, where no one can stand in his way if he decided to act on his promise to punish me when I start lying to him again.

Gosh how could my subconscious betray me like that? Doesn’t it know how dangerous it is to let my mouth loose in this house!

And what the hell is wrong with me agreeing to walk with him as if he wasn’t the freaking devil in a sexy meat suit?

But I’m not entirely helpless now. I’m not still traumatized. Ok I’m still a little traumatized, but I’m not entirely paralyzed by fear anymore. I’m not bound. I’m not hungry or thirsty or dizzy from the drugs I was being forced to inhale.

I can hold my own against him if he decided to physically hurt me. And the fact that he believes I’m some helpless, weak damsel in distress, adds to my advantage. Because he’ll never see it coming.

That is the only reason I got played into this walk easily when he secretly challenged me while his mom wasn’t looking.

I was still wearing the same white outfit with my ankle boots, plus a thick, wool, dark blue winter jacket that reached just before my knees and a white, wool, winter beanie from April’s personal stuff.

I felt a little shy about taking her stuff. What if she hates someone wearing her clothes? Not just someone but a….an alleged prostitute.

Lucas was all dressed and ready for me, leaning against the front door with that smug smirk that is becoming his signature.

He was wearing the same thing I saw him wearing in my room. A navy, blue jeans, a long sleeve black sweater, and black boots, he only added a black winter jacket on him.

His eyes were running up and down my entire body as I approached him.

He tended to do that mostly every time I appeared in front of him. It was disturbing in a way that made me shiver on the inside. Like he was a lion, casing, smelling, and appraising his meal right before he devours it in the most horrific way.

I stood in front of him and raised an eyebrow when he didn’t move from his place.

“You’re sure you want to take this walk with me? I don’t want you coming back to my mom and telling her I made you do it” he said in a bored, yet sarcastic tone.

Could he get more egotistical and annoying?

“I don’t play victim with anyone, don’t worry” I said dryly.

He gazed at me with that same smugness without saying anything, and just before I was about to regret that walk before it even began and head back to my room, he finally decided to move and open the front door, holding it for me to walk ahead.

The hit of fresh air was like heaven to my suffocated chest.

I breathed it in like I was deprived of air for a long time.

The snow was still covering everything, but it wasn’t actively snowing at the moment.

The immense coldness was more than welcome compared to the running heat in my veins after I woke up from that damn memory.

We approached the gate that was still being guarded by the three armed men I saw yesterday as they opened it for us to pass through.

Lucas nodded at them as we passed by them.

I walked by him in silence, letting him guide the way and take me where ever he wanted.

I was waiting for the interrogation to start right away after we left the house behind us, but it never came, much to my surprise and rising suspicion.

I buried my cold hands inside the warmth of the jacket’s side pockets as I chewed the insides of my mouth in worry of his creepy silence.

Ten minutes passed and he was still silent, staring ahead and walking at a slow speed with me by his side.

I was keeping a safe distance from him, not sticking close to his side out of habit. He had a dangerous aura surrounding him and I wondered if I was the only one who felt that around him.

The town came into view with all its small buildings and stores, the voices of its people getting about their business buzzing ahead. It was probably twelve in the afternoon.

I stopped in my tracks and when he noticed me stopping, he turned to look at me questioningly.

“Where are we going exactly?” I asked in a small guarded voice.

He answered casually “Thought I’d give you a tour around our town, if you feel like it”

“And if I don’t?” I asked curiously.

He shrugged and said simply “We can go back the way we came from and call it a walk. A pretty short one at that. It’s called a town if you didn’t know, it’s not exactly very big, to have many options of where we’d like to take a walk through”

I sighed and walked ahead past him, I felt him falling in step easily next to me and I didn’t miss the distance he eliminated between us, the one I was trying to establish from the start.

I couldn’t stand the silence as we walked deeper inside the snow-covered town streets so I asked softly “How many people live in this town?”

“About five hundreds and fifty, give or take” he answered simply.

I was taken aback by that answer.

I was expecting half that number at least.

“Why do people want to live somewhere so far away from the city, practically in the middle of nowhere?” I wondered.

I’m a city person through and through. All for the crowds, shopping malls, large, tall buildings and towers, popular restaurants like McDonald’s, shopping stores like Macy’s, and coffee shops like Starbucks.

This town gives me the impression of being in a post apocalyptic universe where the last of humanity was forced to live in some sort of colonizations, growing their own food, and defending their own territories against intruders, which sounds close to the truth if yesterday’s events were any indication.

“We have everything here, why would they want to go anywhere else? Besides, not all of us like to live in a crowded, noisy city. Some of us like the quietness and the simple life that only a small town provides” he said firmly.

I could tell from his tone that he was one of those people.

It does help being the leader of it and to get to do whatever the hell he likes without anyone stopping him from committing all sorts of crimes, I’d be pretty content with living here if I were him.

I kept that commentary to myself though.

I didn’t want to poke the bear. Not today or any other day.

But I was still curious to learn about their town.

“The government just lets you have control over the borders between you and Canada without any enforcements?” I asked curiously.

His lips twitched as he answered mysteriously “Not exactly”

“What does that mean?” I pressed when he didn’t elaborate.

“Someone is very curious about the town” he commented sarcastically.

Before I could reply and tell him to shove his answers up his A hole, he said challengingly “Tell you what, for every question you ask and I answer, I get to ask you a question of my own. But your answers will be as honest as mine will”

I didn’t miss the underlying hint of a threat in that last sentence of his.

There goes the hidden motive revealing itself.
