Chapter 45
Chapter 45
Ariella
I lie perfectly still beside Davonyé and watch him sleep. I dunno if he’s a light or a deep sleeper yet. This is only the second time I’ve slept with him. I still can't believe he's really here.
With me.
As only mine.
He knows we're mates, and he wants to change. He wants me to change him...
He's gonna collect the rest of his things tomorrow and we're gonna be living together...
We're gonna be in some shit with Carisse when she goes back to school, but I'm determined to deal with that when it happens. I can't dwell on somethin’ that ain't even happened yet. I still need to convince Davonyé to keep shit between us secret for now, at least until Harmony establishes some kinda connection to Jaheim.
God knows how he's gonna react to that…
It doesn't really bother me right now, but if I'm deadly honest, I don't want Carisse around as a constant reminder that my mate’s been with her, but I can’t stop Harmony from finding her true love.
I guess I'll soon find out what Carisse’s fate is, which reminds me…
I slip out from under Davonyé’s arm to get out of bed. I grab a tracksuit and then make my way down the stairs. I don't bother taking shoes or my phone, cuz I won't need it where I'm goin’.
I quietly sneak out into the back yard and listen out for my parents. They've left a window open, but I can't hear that they're awake, so I make a run for it in stealth mode.
I shift while I run, then stuff my tracksuit into my mouth so I can use my arms to run faster. My clawed feet sink into the snow as I run through the trees, effortlessly, dodging any branches that could snap to alert my parents to where I've gone. Their range is longer than mine, especially mom’s, so I need to make sure I get far enough away from home, before...
The lake that dad and I stayed at approaches and I prepare myself to jump it. I zoom in my vision, picking and then focusing on a safe spot to land on the other side. Then after I take the last few strides on land, I jump.
My hair whips around my snout as I soar through the air. The feeling of weightlessness is something I can't even explain. I literally feel like I could fly with how I feel there’s no limitations to what I could do with my body now.
The ground approaches and I brace myself to land, leaning back to miss a stray branch before my claws sink into the icy ground. I still for a few minutes, making sure I can't hear mom and dad coming, but I can't hear anything except the slow current of the water beneath the ice in the lake and the surrounding wildlife in the dark of night.
So I run into the woods ahead of me.
I’ve travelled ten miles now. I know my way around; it's as if I have a mental tracking system inside my mind so I won't have trouble finding my way home.
I stop as I approach a small clearing. I'm hoping that this is gonna work. Will she even hear me? She might not even be in the world...
I shift back to my human form before pulling on my tracksuit.
“Aura,” I whisper, into the dark. I know sound travels further at night, so I can't exactly shout.
There's no reply, so I whisper her name again before resting my back against a Honey Locust tree trunk. I can smell the moose in these woods, and a bear is nearby, but I resist the urge to hunt. I want my first time to be with mom.
I sigh as the time passes with no sign of Aura coming. I told her a week; maybe I'm not allowed to get it sooner than that now. I know she's a busy woman, too. It's not like she can drop everything just because I've called for her.
I kick the snow on the ground with my bare foot. I'll just have to wait a few more days.
“Ariella?”
I look up at Aura and relief fills me. “Aura. I'm sorry for disturbing you. I know you're busy.”
She smiles. “Not for you. What is wrong?”
I know she already knows why I've called her here, but I'll indulge her. “Nothing is wrong… it's just, I wanted to ask you if I could have my magic back early.”
Her eyes swirl before settling again. “You would like me to return it to you now?”
“Yes. If that's okay?”
“It is your magic, Ariella, and it was your choice not to have use of it immediately. What has changed your mind?”
I sigh. “I've realised it's not about what I want, Aura. Obviously, you know about Maximus and what he's doing to wares. Seeing all those people... I’ve grown up hearing stories of my kind and their wars, but I wasn't prepared to see the reality of it.”
She gives me a knowing look. “I know it was upsetting for you to see all those wares in Alaska. I also knew that after seeing what you saw, you would ask for your magic sooner than we agreed.”
“Of course you did.”
She smiles. “I know you have other questions you wish to ask me before I enlighten you again. Ask them.”
“Well, my first question is about me and Davonyé.”
She nods and I know she's gonna make me ask.
“Will we have any other abilities once he changes?”
“You will have to wait and see. There will be abilities between the two of you that you will be able to cause with magic, but regarding the abilities you will have as a result of him changing, that I cannot tell you.”
I nod thoughtfully. Interesting… “Okay. So how long will I live for?”
“You are an Elder, Ariella. Your life is not limited by time, or anything else for that matter.”
“So, I can’t die?”
“No.”
Oh... Shit... Okay, well, I guess that's expected, considering I'm kinda like her. “What about Davonyé?” My chest suddenly feels tight. I don’t wanna live for eternity without him.
“Hmmm, I have been waiting for you to ask me that question. I thought you would have asked it when I visited you at the lake. Anyhow, Davonyé’s life will not be limited by time once given yours or your mother's blood—and yes, your blood will have the same attributes as your mother's because you are a descendant of Ariya. Your mother is unaware of this, but all her children's blood will have the same abilities as her’s. This is so that they can protect their mates. Ariya ensured that any mates of the ones who descended from her would never have to feel the pain of losing their partners. However, they could still be killed. But you, Ariella, you will have the ability to bring those that have died back to life.”
Fucking hell. That’s a revelation and a half... “When will I learn that skill, though, because you said that at first, I'll only focus on the magic that will constantly surge through me.”
“I will give you the ability to save only your mate for now. Your competences and the reach of them will grow the more you learn. Eventually, you will have limitless abilities, but you will still need to make sacrifices for the greater good. That will be the hardest part of your becoming an Elder in every sense of the word.”
I begin to pace the ground beside the tree. “I’m not looking forward to that already...” Watching bad things happen and not being able to do anything about them, even if I have the power to.
“Do not worry of those things for now. As I have said before, our journey together will be a lengthy one. You will not learn all over night. Even I still learn to this day.” I sense her step closer to me, so I stop pacing and turn to face her. I swear I see a flash of blue in her eyes. “Let me show you something.”
A blue light surrounds us and after what feels like a spark of electricity coursing through my body, we appear in a historic looking bedroom, decorated in reds and blacks. Two people are asleep in a four-poster bed in front of us, and Aura walks us closer to them.
“This is Princess Vallessa, and Prince Scarva. They will soon rule over the entire kratius, which is where we are now. The future of your two worlds rely on the friendship between yourself and the princess. You will soon understand what I mean by this, but I need you to know who she is, just in case for any reason when she needs one of us and I cannot go to her, you will know who she is.”
I look at Vallessa and she sighs in her sleep. She is beautiful. I have never seen anyone with such dark skin before. It almost glows because it’s so dark. Scarva looks huge beside her, too.
“She is a lot like your mother in a way,” Aura continues. “Only, Vallessa currently has no idea what the future holds for her or of those that will be born from her. Our worlds will soon change, and this is another reason why you are needed in this role.”
I nod my head. Even though she hasn’t really said much, I still feel like she's making complete sense.
“Come.” Another blinding light surrounds us and we return to the woods. “Now, do you have any other questions?”
Not any that I think she might answer. “I don't think so.”
She nods. “Very well. You have seen your past, you have seen the lives of everyone connected you, and you have seen all lives of those that are in some way, shape, or form, important for you to be aware of up until this point. Their situations and identities will not appear to you until they are needed, but I must warn you, Ariella, you will see things that you do not wish to. There will often be times where your memories, visions, and the images that come to you will hurt you emotionally. You can rid your mind of ones that you no longer wish to see, as long as it does not affect anything in your future. Do you understand me?”
“Yeah...” So if that's the case, I could potentially see Davonyé with all his other women before me, and more specifically, I could see him and Carisse together... “Oh, God...”
“The most important thing to understand about being an Elder, and in turn, about life itself, is that everything always, unequivocally, occurs for a reason. There are no mistakes, there are no coincidences, and there are no accidents. And although you may have certain feelings towards Carisse, she was born for a purpose. Every being that is ever born, is. Without Carisse, you would not have found your mate, nor would Harmony have found hers. Carisse was needed to bring everyone to their rightful places at a specific moment. The chapter of her and Davonyé is over, so you do not need to have access to those memories, but her task is not yet complete so she will be in your future, for now.”
Ugh… “Alright. I understand. I may not like it, but I do understand.”
“Good. Davonyé is your mate, Ariella, and yours alone. You never need question his devotion to you. You will see for yourself in time, but when it comes to you both being committed to each other, never doubt that.”
I feel reassured by those words. I need to make sure I remember them.
“Now, after I have enabled your magic again, you will have access to a select range of abilities. I have already told you that you will be able to save Davonyé should anything happen to him, but there will also be other exciting things that you will be able to do.”
My mood lifts. “Oooh, so it's not all serious, then?”
She smiles at that. “No, not all serious. Let us enable your magic, first, then I will show you.”
