Chapter 15
Chapter 15
Ariella
I lie in bed and stare mindlessly at the ceiling after a two AM wake up call for meat. The moonlight is shining through the half-open curtains and illuminating the space around me. There are swirls up on the ceiling, and I follow them around and around and around, smaller and smaller to the centre, and then back around again, bigger and bigger and bigger...
I feel full now, but I know it won’t last long. I should get some sleep, but I keep thinking about Davonyé. The more I think about what we did, the more I remember how good it felt.
And how much I wanna do it again.
But my soaring arousal is heavily dulled by the fact he's probably hugging up Carisse right now, and my feel-good mood suddenly slips away to be replaced by a painful jealousy.
Even though I have no right...
I can't make him leave his girl. He has to do that shit on his own. I ain't being that girl, mates or not. I just need a distraction. I'm glad my change is coming so that I have one, but already, the thought of being locked up in this house with no way to see Davonyé is getting me seriously down.
Ugh... I roll over but frown into the pillow when my cell vibrates on the side.
I turn over to grab it and see a new WhatsApp message from an unsaved number.
U awake?
I accept the message and then click on the number.
The picture in the circle shows a white Range Rover.
My stomach summersaults. Davonyé? Wow, I’m surprised. He’s a lot more resourceful than I realised…
How did you get this number? I text back.
He types... I got my ways. What u doin?
Really? He's gonna send me wyd texts?
Nothin, I reply. Why r u texting me this late?
He types for ages but all I get back is; We need to talk.
Why?
Because... He types for a while again. I can't stop thinkin about u.
Cliché, but there's probably a lot of truth in that.
I text back. Sorry.
What did you do to me?
I smile for some reason. He thinks I did something to him?
I didn't do anything. On purpose anyway... I'm not a witch. I know I'm pushing it by saying that. Yet, I add.
He types. Oh, and there's me thinkin’ that was just a joke. He sends an eye roll emoji and I whisper a giggle at that.
I don't joke about things like that, I reply.
It takes him a while to start typing after that. Do you regret what we did?
Wow. That's a loaded question... My answer is simple, though. No.
Me either, he sends back straight away. Did you like it?
Yes. I sigh. I wish I could do it again…
I did 2. Can't stop thinkin’ about it. I wanna see you.
He’s thinkin’ about it, too? I'm kinda in quarantine at the moment. My change is coming, remember?
I should be careful with what I say to him, but if he's truly my mate then what my parents said about him accepting it is probably right. It shouldn't freak him out... too much.
He replies quickly. I'm serious, Ariella. I need to see you. I dunno what the fuck is goin’ on with me, but the more I do shit with you the more you fuckin’ me up.
I know, Davonyé… I'm goin through some shit that you wouldn't understand.
Make me then.
I keep telling you...
My cell vibrates in my hand. He's calling me now. Do I answer?
“Hello?” I say quietly.
“I wanna see you,” he says in his standard, deep and rough voice. It makes my pulse race cuz I instantly think of how he sounded when he was deep inside of me.
I take a deep breath and focus on the fact that he’s alone, instead. “I told you, I ain't gonna be able to see you for a while.”
“Why?”
“Look, I've told you nuff times, okay? It's your problem if you don't believe me.”
He says my name as he sighs and then goes quiet for a few seconds. “You ain’t gettin’ me, shawty. I need to see you.”
I sigh in defeat. He’s breakin’ my walls down already... “Look, I'll try, alright? I can't promise anything, though.”
“Alright.” He sounds relieved.
“Where's Carisse?” I dare to ask.
“At your cousins.”
“We can't do this.”
“What do you want me to do? Leave her?”
I tighten my grip on my cell. “Why you askin’ me that for? She's your girlfriend.”
“I only moved here because of her. I don't even know you, Ariella, and you're giving me nothin’ to—”
“I've given you a lot,” I hiss into the speaker, suddenly feeling vexed.
“I didn't mean it like—”
“Whatever.” I hang up and then turn my cell on silent before putting it back on the side.
What do I want him to do? I don't even know. Shit is pissin’ me off… but I do want to see him. My phone screen glows and I can't help myself; I pick it back up.
What’s with all this attitude all of a sudden?
I shake my head as I stare at the message. Seriously, how many times...
I can see you online, Ariella, he texts again.
I smile at that. Get some sleep. Have a good day at school tomorrow 2, I text back, and then when I put my cell back down, I roll over to force myself to sleep.
***
I sleep in till midday but that's only because I was up every three to four hours eating. I check my cell and see a message from Davonyé from last night.
Let me know when I can see you.
I don't know when I'll be able to, so I don’t reply... I need to find out what my parents’ plans are.
I pull on a robe and go in search of them, finally finding them in the backyard. Dad's just dragging a three-foot moose out of the woods while mom attends to the memory garden to the left. The sun is out but it's still a little cold, so I wrap my robe tighter around me before going over to mom.
“How you feeling?” I ask as she quickly glances up at me.
“Big. You?”
“Tired, hungry, not moody, though, not yet.”
“You're okay then,” she says, and I see her smile while pulling some weeds out from the pink, decorative stones.
“I guess.”
She takes a deep breath. “Your scent is so strong now, it’s overpowering everything.” She starts to get up, so I help her. “Let's get something to eat from your dad. Y’know fresh meat is the best.”
Dad's still in his ware form, using his claws to easily cut through the flesh of the moose, tearing the meat from the carcass. He’s kneeling, but he’s almost the same height as mom and me. And yes, I know we ain't the tallest, but he's still huge like this.
He growls to say something but I can't understand it yet. Once I've changed, I'll be able to understand werewolf growls and other noises.
“He's asking if you're hungry,” mom translates.
“When am I ever not hungry these days?”
Dad bares his teeth, clearly finding my answer amusing and then tears a strip of meat from the moose’s neck. This should gross me out, eating raw meat like this, but I've grown up around this and to me, it’s normal. This is one of the best things about this house and the fact it's in the middle of nowhere. No neighbours for miles and nowhere near any main roads really.
I bite into the meat and pull it between my teeth, enjoying the coppery, gamey taste of it. The meat is so tender that it easily tears apart. I quickly chew and feel the blood dripping down my chin before wiping it away. It tastes good and is a welcome change to all the beef I've been eating. The texture of it is similar to beef, but it hasn’t got a lot of fat on, a bit like venison, which is a meat that I really love.
I pop the last bit into my mouth and then lick my lips as dad hands me another chunk. Mom changes and growls as she eats with dad. Her clothes lie shredded on the floor beneath her.
“Davonyé got my number,” I tell them as I sit down on the grass. I look up to see their large, dark eyes staring back at me. “I don't know how he got it, but he's asking to see me. Says he can't stop thinking about me.” I shrug. “I told him I would try, but it's complicated. He thinks I've done something to him.”
Mom makes a sound like a wolf laughing and then she howls softly before she shifts back to her human form. I focus on my meat so I don't have to look at her naked body. Don't get me wrong, she's got a bangin’ body, but I still don't wanna look at it.
She's still laughing. “That's so funny. He thinks you've put a spell on him!”
I smirk. “Seems so.”
“Dad wants to know if you've thought about telling him the truth.”
I shrug. “I have, a few times now, but I think he just reckons I'm being elusive.”
Mom looks at dad, and I know they're talking in each other’s minds. She turns back to face me. “Dad's happy you've started to lay the groundwork on your own. As much as he thinks it's a joke, once he finds out, it won't be as shocking.”
“Yeah, maybe... I don't know when I'll tell him properly. I mean, we don't know anything about each other. We've not had one proper conversation. I just know I really like him. Apart from that, I know nothing.”
“Why don't you spend some time with him?” she suggests.
“Well, I can't now, can I? My birthday’s two days away and if I spent time with him now, I doubt there'd be much talking involved.”
Dad huffs.
“Invite him for dinner tonight. See what he says,” mom says after a quick look at dad again.
My cell chimes in my pocket, so I pull it out to check it.
“It's Davonyé,” I tell them before I read it. I miss you staring holes in my back.
I shake my head, but I'm smiling.
“What did he say?” mom asks.
“He misses being stared at.”
Dad makes another sound that I can't make out.
“Ask him over for dinner,” mom says again. “Dad wants to meet him anyway, and then at least we're close by in case your moods get out of control.”
I look at her. “But... It's not just the anger...” I blush. How am I meant to say this?
She smiles knowingly. “We can move you into Uncle Demetrius’ old room, dad said.”
I blink hard. “You're gonna give me a soundproofed room?”
She rolls her eyes. “Sweetheart, I know we're your parents, but sex is a massive part of being a ware. You really need to get over your hang-ups about it. It's normal and it's healthy, okay? We've been there, and if anything, it's safer for him to be intimate with you now than after you change. These might be your last few days to have sex with him safely, especially if you don't know when you're going to change him.”
“Change him?” Shit, I hadn’t really thought about that part…
She smiles. “Yes. It will be you that changes him, will it not? You don't want anyone else doing the honours, surely?” She frowns.
“Hell, no,” I snap, but then I gasp. “I'm sorry, I don't know where that came from.”
“It's okay,” she says reassuringly and rests a hand on mine. “Text him and let us know. Then we can decide on what to cook for dinner.”
