Chapter 134 Kingpin's Good Friday

Rune left the school immediately. While there were many amazing mutants there, attending school was somewhat—well, not very ominous. In the comics, the school had been destroyed numerous times, by supervillains including, but not limited to, Jean Grey, Magneto, Cassandra, and Apocalypse. The destruction of the academy had practically become a "traditional skill" for the X-Men.

Through Shadowcat's memories, Rune also saw many other things. For example, in this world, her adoptive mother was Mystique, and Thanos had long been defeated.

Currently, the world seems relatively peaceful. Apart from the Avengers and other superpowered individuals fighting a civil war, other supervillains seem to be developing peacefully: the Mad Titan, who was defeated back then, is farming on Titan; Hydra remains silent; Doctor Doom is still in his hometown of Latveria; and even Loki hasn't caused any major disturbances.

Rune, on the other hand, thought it was quite good; this peaceful world allowed him to relax a bit. Of course, the prerequisite for relaxation was having money, so how did he get money?

Ask Iron Man? Rune quickly dismissed the idea. Iron Man was currently locked in a fierce battle with Captain America, and borrowing money from him would inevitably drag him into the Civil War. Besides, Tony Stark was a decent guy, and Rune didn't want to rob a hero.

Looking for Osborn Industries? In the little rascal's memory, the current head of Osborn Industries is Harry Osborn. Rune thought it best not to scare him.

However, Rune quickly set his sights on Wilson Fisker Enterprises. Many people may not be familiar with this company, but everyone knows its leader, Kingpin.

He is one of Marvel's most famous human villains. Despite provoking numerous heroes such as the Punisher, Ogre Magi, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, as well as supervillains like Hammerhead, Mr. Negative, and Tombstone, Kingpin still manages to thrive in New York City. And the fact that he's currently running for mayor of New York City is further proof of his abilities.

King doesn't possess any superpowers, but he has developed an incredibly strong physique, powerful enough to withstand bullets. His agility far surpasses that of humans of similar build, and his strength is unbelievably immense, capable of suppressing many superpowered individuals, including Spider-Man—a truly illogical feat.

Of course, these weren't the reasons Rune chose him. The real reason was that Kingpin's money was obtained through arson, murder, and robbery, and he himself was a ruthless and wicked man. Rune felt no remorse for robbing him. In some universes, Kingpin even killed his beloved Vanessa simply because she made him weak.

The top floor of the Fisker Tower houses Kingpin's private office; the room is spacious and solemn, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the New York City skyline.

Car headlights streamed down the street like a galaxy, while inside, dark walnut bookshelves, leather sofas, and a priceless Picasso masterpiece hung behind a desk. The air was thick with the scents of cigars and leather.

It has a faint, lingering whiskey aftertaste.

Three knocks came from outside the door, the knocker's movements precise and restrained.

"Come in!"

A man walked in. His name was Michael Carson, and he had once been in charge of Kingpin's overseas money laundering network. He was dressed in a sharp suit, but his tie was askew.

Kingpin's gaze lingered on the tie for half a second.

Without any orders, Carson slammed his knees onto the marble floor, his forehead touching the ground. His voice was still trembling: "Sir—I made a mistake—"

Jin didn't look up, but the nib of his pen, which was signing the document, paused on the paper for a second, the ink spreading into a small dot. A moment later, his deep voice came through: "Continue."

"Sir... I can't help it. My sister has been arrested by the FBI, and I—... They're using a sting operation, and..." Kim waved his hand impatiently, continuing to scrutinize the documents in his hand. It was a donation agreement for a charitable foundation, a project he had meticulously prepared for his mayoral campaign: "Get to the point."

"I—I told them the locations of the three warehouses—."

His fingers dug into the carpet, his knuckles turning white. "But I really didn't reveal any crucial information—"

Kingpin was silent for a moment, then he stood up and turned on the gold gramophone that lay to the side. The gramophone began to play Bach's "Air on the G String." The strings flowed like silk, solemn and sorrowful, like the prelude to a funeral.

Kingpin picked up the metal vase from the desk with one hand and came up behind the traitor.

The first blow struck Carson's forehead, the dull thud of his skull cracking masked by the music. The second blow caused the back of the man's head to cave in completely, splattering brain matter and blood onto Picasso's canvas.

Kingpin returned to the table, put down the vase, took a silk handkerchief from the drawer, and slowly wiped his fingers. He glanced at the painting—the blood droplets on the abstract, distorted figure were surprisingly harmonious.

He pressed the communicator button, and soon, an elderly man in a gray uniform appeared silently. He was carrying cleaning tools.

They were completely unconcerned about the mess in front of them.

"Please wipe it with distilled water; this painting is susceptible to chlorine damage," Kingpin said with a smile, as casually as if discussing the weather. "As for Mr. Carson—send him to the East River Wastewater Treatment Plant, and remember to tie him with steel bars."

After dealing with the traitor, Kingpin went straight home.

It was late at night when Kingpin's black limousine slowly drove into the private estate. The headlights pierced the rain, illuminating the outline of the Gothic mansion.

As he got out of the car, the bodyguard tried to open the door for him, but Kingpin suddenly raised his hand to stop him. His gaze was fixed on the doorknob—the keyhole had been completely destroyed. This supposedly invincible security door had been defeated by sheer force.

Kingpin narrowed his eyes and said, "You all stay outside."

He bent down to remove his Italian handmade leather shoes, stepping barefoot onto the marble floor to ensure silence. As he passed through the entryway, he discreetly pulled a medieval battle axe from among the armor ornaments. A weapon far too large for an ordinary person, it was just right for Kingpin.

He walked into the hall and was shocked to find a man sitting on a leather sofa with his back to him. Kingpin suddenly sprang into action, his seemingly obese body moving with the agility and speed of a cheetah.

The battle axe came down, but Kingpin's furious blow only resulted in the axe handle bending and the blade breaking.

At this moment, the newcomer finally stood up and turned to look at Kingpin.

"Hello, Kingpin, the emperor of New York's underworld, the shadow king whom even the law cannot touch." His young and handsome face was full of mockery. "I'd like to borrow some money from you. What do you think?"

However, in the next instant, Kingpin dropped his completely destroyed axe and threw a punch at Rune. Although the punch broke the sound barrier, it didn't even trigger Rune's Beast Sense. Rune easily caught the punch and then threw Kingpin away.

Kingpin tumbled and crashed into a wall not far away. Despite the architect's careful reinforcement, the wall still collapsed, revealing the steel frame beneath. He immediately realized the disparity in strength between them, but Kingpin gritted his teeth. He still had some trump cards; he still had a chance to win.
